# The Surrealist Compliment Generator For Adium

2008.07.16

Jakob – glad you like it, and I'm really looking forward to receiving them all, of course!

Oh, by the way, I was initially inspired to write this plugin by someone who doesn't want to be named nor linked, but as he was surprised I actually really didn't, I did so now by almost not doing so.

Your aquiline senescence implores me to generalize within the relms of a starfish's lifelong hallucinations of gelatin pools and of actuaries floating upon the Rhine.
Hahaha...
Thanks Ben, your script rocks! Get ready to receive a lot of weird messages from me!

Florian – of course, I was perfectly aware of that but miserably failed to write so! Thanks for noticing, ironed out.

To be precisely... KDE and Gnome are no Linux Desktops, they're desktop environments available for all operation systems, even Windows and Mac OS X! ;-)

Jakob – hopefully you don't mistake this article to be “elitist” when it comes to Apple being mainstream now. I'm perfectly fine with that, as I only care whether it's the best solution for me. The underlying trend I criticise about Apple could be the very same for almost any company that gives up quality for quantity. There are several reasons for Apple doing so (it's just not as simple as “lower quality with at least the same quantity usually means a higher profit margin”), and I might carry out the “why” some time, but that's not the point of this article.

What I really like is your saying, I spend more time working on work than working on my system. That's so true and one of the first things I noticed about switching from PC to Mac, too. Nice observation.

Jakob – yup, Paprika is a dream of a movie. Thank you very much for the hint, much appreciated.

And Fooly Cooly! What a strange yet really entertaining series. More! I don't know if it's any good, but I remember having watched Königin der Tausend Jahre as a child, maybe the first anime I saw right after Heidi

Yeah! Bebop and Trigun rock.
I also enjoyed FLCL... Do you know that one?

# Just Because It's The Best It Does Not Mean It's Good

I switched to a Mac by the time I stopped playing games under Windows. I saw how well Macs worked during my apprenticeship in a advertising agency. And until now, I never looked back. I spend more time working on work than working on my system.
But I also see here in Shanghai how Apple products are become more and more "in" - even students are running around with hacked iPhones now. I just hope this trend doesn't influence the company too much, I hope they still spend as much time as before - or even more - on developing their computers...

Jakob – you mean, you live in China and don't have an unlimited supply of, erm, DVDs? I'm sure you're going to enjoy Texhnolyze.

About Casshern, das glaubst du nicht, der lief im Pro7-Nachtprogramm. I really enjoyed that movie as well. Only it is a double-edged sword (on the one hand, the setting itself is, well, almost fascist, on the other hand, the character development is an essentially Buddhistic theme). Incredible visuals, yet to be reached again (not even Speed Racer was that impressive), with a remarkable both score and OST.

Ghost In The Shell is "yet another" great anime. Not as demanding, but you as a movie freak, I bet you enjoyed Cowboy Bebop with all its references as well! Also worth mentioning is Trigun, and we're both looking forward to seeing the adaption of Akira

Thank you for that one - never heard about it before. I'll try to find it somewhere.
Let me know what you think about Paprika later! It's really great.
You probably know them but Ghost In The Shell 1 & 2 are must-see's, too.
And there's one anime that is not really about this topic - but so damn awesome - Casshern. It's actually an anime with actors, but that movie really blew my mind like no other anime adaptation before. Check it out!

Jakob – thanks for your comment. You're right, the new name does sound better. Only it will be harder to “become famous on google” ;-)

Also, thanks for your hint on Paprika. Actually, this movie sounds so good I just ordered it a second ago. May I pass the ball back? Do you know Texhnolyze?

Why are so many good anime out there, with so interesting and substantial themes, and why aren't they being taken seriously? Nevertheless, looks like there's even something on terrorism (FLAG). I really like serious fun.

Benjamin Wittorf+ The Social Media Device

Jakob – glad you like the idea.

The Zune is a passive device, it's not looking actively for other Zunes, nor does it provide any “social” features. Also, you can “only” share files (DRM-crippled with a half-life of three days; it's Wi-Fi, by the way), and only with Zunes.

Microsoft has a nice set-up there, but it's once more completely gone wrong thanks to DRM and bad marketing (a brown Zune? Hello from Seattle?).

Anyway, I'd buy one if these devices if they ever make it to the market. Sounds like a great way to find new music.

Benjamin Wittorf+ How To Listen To BBC Internet Radio Streams On A Sonos

2008.03.27

corner_back – you're welcome! Thank you for trying out the how-to and applying it to a Windows scenario, as well as writing it down.

AlienBBC is released under the GPL (from their site: This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License, version 2), so you should be allowed to modify it in any way you'd like to. SqueezeCenter is also released under the GPL.

I really like the idea of streamlining (and integrating the Windows part into) this how-to. Also, it's a great idea to make an installer for Windows. As for Linux, I'd rather only provide the modified AlienBBC plugin because I presume Linux/Unix users know what they're doing.

corner_back+ How To Listen To BBC Internet Radio Streams On A Sonos

2008.03.27

Grüße aus München!
Thanks a million Benjamin for coming up with this way of getting real streams in a Sonos compatible format.

As I mentioned on the Sonos fourms, I have got as far as a manually chosen output from SqueezeCentre.

I will try and get the remote changing of streams working tonight if I have time.
From the looks of it it is pretty straight forward.

If it is as easy as I think, then maybe a next step would be to get the instructions for the common user as simple as possible.

An all-in-one installer for windows would also be trivial to put together, with all necessary installers in one downloadable self executable, which you could run to install and configure everything in a couple of clicks of a mouse.

My only question is whether it is allowed, legally I mean, to supply a changed config file of the AlienBBC to allow non squeeze clients? I couldnt find any licence terms in the installed plugin.

If you can't get the RealAudio portions of the BBC Radio Player outside of the UK, please do follow the contact-us link and we'll investigate. There are some programmes we are unable to stream internationally; and Windows Media streams are restricted as mentioned.

James – thank you very much for pointing this out. I'll update the how-to accordingly.

For the record, though, I'd like to mention that at the time of developing this solution it wasn't possible to listen to BBC Internet radio streams outside the UK (tested from Switzerland and Germany some weeks ago). Do you mind telling me if we were wrong or if the IP policy has just changed?

You say "It's per se not possible to listen to and view any of the BBC Internet streams if you live outside the UK"

Might I confirm that all the BBC's RealAudio radio streams are available worldwide. No hacking required (fun though all this looks!). It's just as simple as pointing anything that plays RealAudio to our streams.

In addition, Windows Media streams of our stations may be available, subject to this pseudo-code:
if ($station > 4) {it's available}
…i.e. BBC Radio 4 is not; BBC Radio 5 live is.

Thank you for listening,

Benjamin Wittorf+ The Viral License

2008.02.13

Jakob – thinking about it, no, it should only need one additional sentence. The original author itself should (as in “must”) decide what needs to be changed at least, e.g. […] Under the following conditions: You must change at least the background-color and/or background-image […].

But legally, I don't know what it takes to define that. Words like "substantially" along the required change could do this.

Another problem I forgot to mention: You'll have to disclose pretty much of the original source.

The problem is, that if someone moves a layer 5 pixel to the left or right he can already call it "altered".
The idea itself is good, but it's probably pretty tough to put it down in just a few sentences. You have to go into more detail, like "there has to be added at least one big change" or something like that... Don't you think so?
